How we overcame being an international couple
So being an international couple is surely not an easy thing, but there are ways of overcoming the differences and the distance. So, let´s start with some background info about us. We are a Korean, Danish couple. When I met, my boyfriend was studying in Germany as an exchange student, so distance wasn't that bad, we did not feel any difference in time zone, and he went to visit me in Denmark. But then he finished his course as an international student and had to go back to Korea. So that is when we for real felt the distance, there is 7-8 hours’ time difference between Korea and Denmark, depending on whenever it is summer or winter.
And you may wonder how did we overcome this time difference? Well it is simple, we skyped a lot, we tried to not fight too much, but of the cause, nobody can avoid fighting a bit. Also, the most important thing is to be understanding and flexible with your time. My boyfriend often stayed up late hours to skype with me, he turned around his entire life circle to be able to call with me, because during the day he often had to take classes. Also in the winter time I went to Korea to visit him and his family, so I went there and stayed there for 3 weeks, I did have to accept the fact that he still had to take his classes, which meant I did have a lot of waiting time by myself, but well as I mentioned earlier to be understanding, whenever he was done with class or he had a day off or just during the weekend we spend the day together. See that is one of the good things about being an international couple, I think we value the time we have together more than normal couple who can see each other every day.
I did run into some other struggles with being an international couple, which is language boundary and culture difference, so did my boyfriend, but first I will tell about mine. So, when I went to my boyfriend’s house the first time, I did realize I had to bring a present, but the problem is what should I bring? I searched on google countless of times to find a solution to this problem, and there didn´t seem to be any solution, and my boyfriend wasn´t much help either, he just told me he did not know. Either way, I did get one thing out of him, that normally when you go to your boyfriend or girlfriends house you do not, and I say do not, give them chocolate or flowers or wine, well that´s what you do in Denmark, so you see why this is a problem?
Well, I will say I ended up buying some vitamins and sun creme and some traditional Danish figures. (side note, I am not sure they liked the figures). My next problem was about language, although I am able to speak and understand some Korean, for some mystical reason at this very moment I seemed to have forgotten all of my language skills (I was probably nervous). And also, you have to answer in polite language, which I did not seem to master at all, so I came to fear that I would insult someone, I don’t know why I feared this, because my boyfriend’s family is so nice and understanding, so it was probably all inside my head. (I should practice my language skills).
When it came to food vise I never really had a problem, because Danish food is gross to me, so Korean food was nice for a change, way better than Danish food. So, another important thing is to be openminded and try new things. Well the 3 weeks came to an end and I had to go home, and parting ways surely aren´t fun, because we got used to being around each other. But when that is said I already planned to go back to Korea in spring, and I did go back. When I came back from Korean the second time, the distance was back again, but it was fine, at this point or relationship was already so strong, that I knew the distance wouldn´t break it. Later that year my boyfriend went back to Germany to study, which was nice, but it is tuff for him, since European culture is so different from Korean culture, and also the food. But he is doing well, he came to Denmark to visit me again, and he surely struggled a lot with the food, which is pretty understandable, even I struggle with eating Danish food. Anyway, although he is in Germany we still have to deal with the distance. When I get winter vacation I will be taking the train for almost 11 hours to go visit him and spend some time together. But being a long-distance couple takes effort, from both sides, so if you want the relationship to succeed,
you do need to work for it. So, fighting to all of those other long-distance couples out there. ^^
