Cladophora aegagropila is not really a plant, but a ball of algae from 3-10 cm wide. It is a decorative exception from the rule about avoiding algae at all costs. It is normally found in shallow lakes, where the movement of the waves forms it into a sphere. In an aquarium, it must be turned regularly to keep it in shape. Cladophora aegagrophila can be divided into smaller pieces, which become spherical with time, or which form a carpet if attached to roots and stones. Protected in parts of Japan.

모스볼 혹은 마리모는 원래 식물이 아니며, 너비 3-10 cm 가량의 조류 공이다. 대부분의 조류는 수조에서 제거하지만, 이 모스볼 만큼은 장식용으로 사용한다. 모스볼은 약같의 물결이 형성되있는 얕은 호수에서 보통 발견할 수 있다. 따라서 모스볼의 모양을 유지시켜주기 위해서는 규칙적으로 위치를 바꿔줘야 한다. 모스볼은 작은 조각을 나눌 수 있으며, 시간이 흐르면 구 모양이 된다. 또는 돌이나 뿌리에 달라붙어 카펫을 형성하기도 한다. 일부 모스볼은 일본에서 보호 된다.

In Korea, some of the people misunderstand that Marimo and moss ball are different species. According to Wikipedia in the English version, Marimo and moss ball are same. I quoted a sentence.

"Aegagropila linnaei, known as marimo in Japanese and as Cladophora ball, lake ball, mossimo or moss ball in English, is a species of filamentous green algae found mostly in a number of lakes in the northern hemisphere." -Wikipedia

한국에서 일부 사람들은 마리모와 모스볼이 다른 종류라고 오해한다. 영문판 위키피디아에서 검색하면 같은 종임을 알 수 있다. 

"일본에서는 마리모, 영어로는 모스볼, 모시모, 호스 볼, 클라도포라 볼이라고 알려진 Aegagropila linnaei 북반구의 많은 호수에서 발견되는 실모양의 녹색 조류 종이다."
